Ministry to Youth

Young people today need a place to believe in God alongside other believing youth, a safe, caring place to belong, and the freedom to explore who they might become as they grow into God’s person.

First Presbyterian is that place!

Our programs for young poeple offer a caring atmosphere where kids are encouraged to try new things and learn new skills. Young people are invited to meet God in a variety of settings, to ask all their questions, and to deepen faith with each other and with committed adults.

Here are some of the programs we offer young people so they can believe, belong, and become;

Youth Groups

Youth Groups for Middle School and High School "normally" meet Sunday nights from 6:00 to 7:30.  Both groups meet for dinner and brief worship, including enthusiastic singing and faith stories aimed at kids’ concerns.  Then the groups divide for evening activities.

That’s the “normal” schedule which is regularly interrupted by scavenger hunts, service projects, team-building days, movies nights, sleep-overs, weekend retreats and other special activities.

Our youth groups always have something special happening.  Click here to see movies of our Youth.

Music Groups

Music Clubs meet Wednesday nights from 5:30 - 7:30 for children and youth of all ages.  The programs begin with a light supper at 5:30 which the youth share together.  At 6:00 the fun begins.  Choir Club is designed for preschool children - 3rd grade.  These children sing  fun faith songs, while learning the fundamentals of music and singing.  They also enjoy a Bible story and games with their teacher, Brenda Sumwalt.  Older youth in 4th grade and above are invited to participate in Presby Productions which prepares and presents two major musicals each year.  The youth in Presby Productions learn the music for the show, audition for parts, create the sets and put on wonderful faith productions. They also attend weekly Bible snippets and have a wild recreation period!

Christian Education for kids!

Our kids “grow their faith” during our Sunday morning education hour, which happens at 10:00 AM between the worship services.    Our children’s programs feature Bible learning with lot of fun activities that connect faith to life.  Youth change topics and learning styles frequently.  (We don’t want anyone getting bored!)  We aren't afraid of the tough issues or kids’ challenging questions!

A Special "First Light" Feature for little children: Children’s Church

            At First Presbyterian we know that little children can’t sit for long in "big people church".  So little children, ages 3-3rd grade, attend the early part of First Light worship and then go to Children’s Church for a special age appropriate worship time.  This is a combination education and worship time.  The children enjoy Bible stories told with our beautiful Betty Luken’s flannel board.  They sing, dance, pray, and enjoy crafts and fun play.  Our children love it!  In fact the program has grown so much in the last year that we now offer two worship rooms - one for older children and the other for younger children!
